For the bookish person in your life, a reading angel is the perfect gift. This angel was made from a page of the “Cat Who…†Series by the late Lilian Jackson Brown. Qwilleran’s name is dropped in this angel if you look closely.
Steel wire was hand-bent into the angel shape, embellished with a wire book. A page from The Cat Who Had 60 Whiskers was cut out and dipped in encaustic medium, as well as tissue paper for the wings and head. The paper was attached to the steel wire with the beeswax and resin mixture. It comes with a tan hemp cord for hanging. This angel measures 3 tall by 3 3/4 inches wide and 1 inch deep.
Encaustics should be cared for as you would for any fine art piece. Encaustic derives from the word ‘burn in’ and is a process of applying molten wax colors to a surface for the creation of images or decoration that began more than 2 millennia ago with Roman Egyptian wax portraits.
Be gentle if handling the ornament in extreme heat or cold. It is best to let the piece acclimate to room temperature. Hanging it in direct sunlight may cause some fading over time.Â
