Our community is full of people who do not identify with the binary gender structure. I created a pendant with the transgender symbol, and decided to use the design in an angel as well.
I printed the transgender symbol onto the tissue paper, and then dipped all angel component tissue paper into a beeswax and resin mixture called encaustic medium. Then the paper was adhered to the steel wire angel shape.
The transgender symbol is a mix of female (Venus), male (Mars), and androgyne (Venus and Mars mixed). This symbol was designed in the 1990s by Holly Boswell, Wendy Parker, and Nancy R. Nangeroni.Â
It comes with a silver satin ribbon for hanging. This angel measures 2 3/4 inches tall by 3 1/2 inches wide.
Encaustics should be cared for as you would for any fine art piece. Encaustic derives from the word ‘burn in’ and is a process of applying molten wax colors to a surface for the creation of images or decoration that began more than 2 millennia ago with Roman Egyptian wax portraits.
